Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, has demonstrated his displeasure at the implementation of the Electronic Transfer levy (E-levy) regardless of a legal dispute testing the section of the bill.
In a several posts on his social media handle, he reiterated that the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), which is the tax-collecting agency , ought to have waited for the determination of the case before the rollout of the levy if really the nation was practicing a true and accepted democracy.
As per him, the Akufo-Addo-led government has arrogated powers to itself that it has turned into a law.
He explained this has occasioned by the distorted democracy in the country.
He further mourned the degree of exemption being executed under President Akufo-Addo, who is tauted as human rights lawyer.
“The unpleasant, backward, ridiculous, blackmail conspire called E-levy is being executed starting today by the GRA for the benefit of government.
“This is in spite of a case at the Supreme Court, filled by Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, Hon. Mahama Ayariga and Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa, testing the legitimacy of the process leading to its purported passage into law.
“In any obvious and appropriate democracy, where law and order works, this ought not to be happening . If not, how dare the GRA neglect the processes in court and go on to tax momo
Tragically, democracy has been so debased, to the degree that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government is the law, the process and procedure .
“The degrees of foolish and unbridled impunity we are seeing under the supposed legal luminary cum human right lawyer President is unprecedented in the history the entire existence of our Republic,” Dr. Clement Apaak said in his several tweets.
The E-levy implementation began on Sunday May 1, 2022.
The first day of the implementation were met with difficulties including E-levy charge on the GH₵100 limit which the government had said won’t draw in the tax.
Notwithstanding, the Ministry of Finance has pledged that all difficulties will be settled.
GRA has likewise served notice of refunding completely wrong levies on electronic transfer.
