Presidential hopeful and Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has revealed the reasons behind Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, a member of Parliament for the Effutu constituency in the Central Region, not being given a ministerial appointment.
During a live radio interview on Cape-Coast-based Kastle FM, Mr. Agyapong explained that Afenyo-Markin missed out on the position due to an issue he had with an agricultural bank. As a result, the president rejected him, and the position was given to Mrs. Mavis Hawa Koomson.
“We were advocating for Alex Markin to get the ministerial position. However, there was an issue involving an agricultural bank. The president didn’t even want to hear his name. So, the most senior after Alex Markin was Hawa Koomson, and we secured the position for her,” he stated.
Kennedy Agyapong reiterated his role in supporting Hawa Koomson, the current Minister for Fisheries, and claimed that without his backing, she wouldn’t have been able to hold any political position, as nobody would have taken her seriously.
“How could Hawa Koomson, who was based in the Central Region, have obtained such a position? I was the one who created special initiatives for her. Anyone being considered for a ministerial position had to go through me,” he emphasized.
He continued, “Are you suggesting that Hawa Koomson could have run campaigns in the Central Region without me? Who would have listened to her?”
The New Patriotic Party is currently preparing to select its official flagbearer for the 2024 general elections, which will be held in December 2024. Kennedy Agyapong is competing against Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, former Minister for Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and former MP for Mampong, Francis Addai Nimo.
The NPP is expected to hold its national delegates conference on November 4 to elect its flagbearer for the 2024 general elections.”
