The Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has embarked on a major initiative to establish approximately 80 traditional councils in the Volta Region by the end of November.
This effort is significant as the Volta Region is home to the highest number of paramount chiefs in Ghana, surpassing all other regions in the country.
“No other region in Ghana has even half the number of paramount chiefs that Volta boasts,” noted Mr. Harry Attipoe, the Volta Regional Registrar at the Volta Regional House of Chiefs.
The ministry has already commenced the process of inaugurating the councils. “We are inaugurating 14 traditional councils from this week into the next,” Mr. Attipoe revealed. Following this, an additional 30 councils will be inaugurated by November.
Mr. Attipoe further clarified that the Ministry, under the leadership of Mr. Stephen Asamoah Boateng, considers the project a key step in formally recognizing and supporting traditional authorities in the region.
“The ministry aims to inaugurate about 80 traditional councils in the Volta Region by the end of November,” he added.
Last week, 8 out of the planned 14 councils were inaugurated, with the remaining 6 set to follow shortly.
This initiative highlights the vital role of traditional governance in the region’s cultural and social framework. It is expected to bolster the efforts of paramount chiefs in upholding traditions, resolving disputes, and fostering development in the Volta Region.
