However, a new wave of off-grid solar solutions is revolutionizing energy access in these areas. This article explores the stories of three communities in Ghana—Adom, Nkabom, and Sankofa—where solar energy has been harnessed to empower local residents. Through innovative approaches and community-led initiatives, these communities demonstrate the transformative power of solar energy in improving livelihoods, education, and healthcare.
Adom: Illuminating Lives and Livelihoods
Adom, located in the Western Region, was once plagued by darkness after sunset. Limited access to electricity hindered economic opportunities and social development.
Solar Microgrids: With the introduction of solar microgrids, Adom’s residents now have access to reliable electricity. The community collectively invested in solar panels, batteries, and distribution infrastructure, creating a self-sustaining system.
Entrepreneurship and Income Generation: Solar-powered businesses have emerged in Adom, such as charging stations for mobile phones, solar-powered appliances, and community refrigeration units. These ventures have empowered community members to generate income and improve their economic well-being
In an interview with Ghanaian Watch Kwame Mensah, a local entrepreneur, shares, “Solar energy has transformed our lives. I run a mobile phone charging station, and now I can support my family and invest in my children’s education.”
Abena Darko, a community leader, states, “With solar-powered refrigeration, we can store agricultural produce longer, reducing post-harvest losses and improving our income.”
Nkabom: Brightening Education and Youth Empowerment
At Nkabom, nestled in the Ashanti Region, faced significant challenges in providing quality education to its youth due to a lack of electricity.
Solar-Powered School: Through partnerships with NGOs and government agencies, Nkabom established a solar-powered school. Classrooms are equipped with solar panels, lighting, and educational technology, allowing students to study and excel even after dark.
Digital Inclusion: Access to solar energy has bridged the digital divide in Nkabom. The school’s solar-powered computer lab provides students with internet connectivity, enabling digital literacy and expanding educational opportunities.
I spoke to Akosua Asare, a student, and she shares her experience, “Solar energy has opened up a whole new world for us. I can study at night, use computers, and access online resources. It has broadened our horizons.”
Kwadwo Osei, a teacher, states, “Solar-powered classrooms have transformed education in Nkabom. Our students are excelling, and they are more motivated to learn.”
Sankofa: Energizing Healthcare for Better Lives
Introduction: Sankofa, located in the Eastern Region, struggled with inadequate healthcare services, particularly during emergencies and nighttime hours.
Solar-Powered Health Center: A solar-powered health center was established in Sankofa, ensuring uninterrupted power supply for medical equipment, lighting, and refrigeration for vaccines and medications. This has significantly improved the quality and accessibility of healthcare services.
Maternal and Child Health: Solar energy has empowered Sankofa’s health workers to provide essential maternal and child healthcare services, even during nighttime deliveries. The availability of solar-powered lighting and medical equipment has contributed to safer childbirth and reduced maternal and infant mortality rates.
Adwoa Mensah, a nurse, shares, “Solar energy has transformed our ability to provide quality healthcare. We can now attend to emergencies, perform life-saving procedures, and store vaccines properly.”
Osei Boateng, a community member, states, “Solar-powered healthcare has given us peace of mind. We no longer worry about darkness hindering medical services. Our community is healthier and happier.”
