Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a prominent figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a contender for the party’s flagbearer position, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the government’s management of the local currency.
During his campaign tour in Kintampo East on July 16, Mr. Agyapong voiced his discontent with the declining value of the Cedi. He revealed that the worth of his Cedi equivalent, amounting to $40 million, had diminished to $16 million within a five-month period, spanning from March to August 2022.
Although Mr. Agyapong refrained from mentioning individuals by name, he indirectly referred to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who leads Ghana’s economic management team and is also vying for the NPP flagbearer position.
Mr. Agyapong highlighted the irony of an economic manager seeking financial support from the International Monetary Fund while simultaneously claiming to be a “strategist.”
In his address, Mr. Agyapong emphasized the importance of conducting a clean campaign. He pledged to address any allegations against him and stressed the necessity of governing the country with rationality.
The lawmaker from Assin Central, Agyapong, cautioned his fellow flagbearer contenders to uphold fairness and transparency throughout the campaign. He assured that he would respond to every accusation directed at him and urged others to be mindful of their statements.
While presenting his economic management abilities to party delegates, Mr. Agyapong asserted that he would be a more effective guardian of the economy compared to his rivals. He highlighted his successful businesses, employing over 7,000 individuals monthly, as evidence of his capacity to contribute to reducing unemployment rates in the nation.
