Nana Amoako Poku, a 68-year-old member of the Offinso Ahyirem Royal Family, has received the title of Offinsohene-elect.
At a meeting of the Asanteman Council in Kumasi on December 18, 2023, Nana Amoako Poku, a 68-year-old royal from the Offinso Ahyirem Royal Family, was introduced as the chosen Offinsohene.
The announcement of Nana Amoako Poku as Offinsohene-elect took place during the last Asanteman Council gathering of 2023, with Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II presiding.
During the session addressing the Offinso vacant stool, the Offinso Queen mother was notably absent, leading to the Kwakwaboa Abusuapanyin, Opanyin Yaw Nkrumah Adusah, explaining the family’s nomination of Nana Amoako Poku in accordance with Asante tradition.
In the absence of Dr. Kofi Kodua Sarpong, previously nominated by the Queen mother, Nana Amoako Poku was introduced as the Offinsohene elect, leading to the withdrawal of some of Dr. Sarpong’s supporters.
The Queen mother’s repeated failure to nominate a qualified royal for the vacant stool prompted the Abusuapanyin to take on the responsibility, following Asante tradition, to nominate Nana Amoako Poku.
Nana Amoako Poku, a 68-year-old royal known for his role as a curator of Asante heritage, a timber merchant, and the Otumfuo Kekabuosohene, has been named as the Offinsohene-elect.
In previous attempts to fill the vacant stool, the Queen mother’s nomination of Dr. Kofi Kodua Sarpong was challenged due to his non-royal lineage, prompting the Asantehene to encourage further consultation with the royal family.
Despite the Asantehene’s guidance, the Queen mother persisted in presenting Dr. K.K. Sarpong as a candidate, leading to continued challenges and the eventual nomination of Nana Amoako Poku.
Once again, Nana Amoako Poku, a 68-year-old royal from the Offinso Ahyirem Royal Family, has been designated as the Offinsohene-elect.
