President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo highlighted that the Agenda 111 Hospitals Project aims to generate more than 60,000 jobs upon completion. He emphasized, “On each construction site, we have an average of 120 workers. When these hospitals are finished, each district hospital will employ around 559 individuals, regional hospitals 1,343, and psychiatric hospitals 947.”
“This totals 67,635 jobs created through the Agenda 111 Hospitals Project,” he explained, stressing the project’s dual impact on healthcare and employment.
President Akufo-Addo made these remarks while inaugurating the Sekyere Kumawu and Adansi North District Hospitals in Kumawu and Fomena during his recent visit to the Ashanti Region. The ceremonies were attended by chiefs, government officials, healthcare workers, and local residents.
Regarding funding, the projects, including the aforementioned hospitals, are part of a larger initiative funded with $175 million secured from the United Kingdom Export Financing in 2012. “When my administration took office in 2017, only one hospital in Dodowa had been completed,” noted the President. “Since then, with $38.8 million remaining, we’ve completed facilities in Kumawu, Fomena, and Takoradi,” he added, underscoring the government’s commitment to healthcare development.
Looking ahead, President Akufo-Addo announced upcoming hospital projects, including facilities in Elubo, Bogoso, Mpohor, Nsuaem, and Wassa Dunkwa in the Western Region, alongside the upgrade of a public health facility in Akontombra. He also mentioned the forthcoming Ashanti Regional Hospital in Sawua and highlighted plans to finish major projects like the Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence at Korle Bu in Accra by the end of 2024.
The Paramount Chief of Kumawu, Barima Safo Tweneboa Kodua, conveyed appreciation on behalf of the Asantehene and the people of Ashanti Region for the government’s inclusive development agenda. He acknowledged the prolonged completion of the hospital due to political changes but expressed gratitude for its acceptance by the community.
He commended the contractor, NMS Infrastructure Limited, for constructing a state-of-the-art hospital and requested government intervention to repair the six-kilometre road from Kumawu town to the hospital, which currently hampers accessibility for residents and neighboring communities. Additionally, he urged the President to authorize the Finance Minister to allow the hospital to hire more healthcare personnel to meet rising demand, citing the current unsustainable use of internally generated funds for staffing.
